Universitas Brawijaya (UB) provides a VPN service for UB academics to be able to use several applications that are only allowed to be accessed within the campus’s internal network. The VPN services available in UB are PPTP and L2TP. PPTP and L2TP services are available for Windows and Android, while for Mac and iPhone only L2TP. To be more secure, we recommend using L2TP because it uses a security key). In addition, to be able to use the VPN service in UB, users must enter their UB account and password.
PPTP (Point-To-Point Tunneling Protocol) is a protocol that has been used for a long time and was originally designed by Microsoft. Pros of PPTP: works on older computers, is part of the Windows operating system and easy to set up. Disadvantages of PPTP: less secure.
L2TP/IPsec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) is a combination of PPTP and Cisco’s L2F protocol. This protocol uses keys to establish a secure connection at each end of your data tunnel. The addition of the IPsec protocol also increases security.
